This is a great sewing machine which was surprising considering how mini the thing is. I would say its a good purchase for a beginner (gift idea for children?) or for someone with sewing experience that needs something portable (battery operated).
The only negative thing I can say is that it won't do really thick materials because it won't fit under the arm. But since I didn't expect that considering the cost, I won't let it affect the 5-star rating.

After reading others' reviews I had high hopes for this little sewing machine. My 12 year old daughter was excited to receive it as a Christmas gift as she loves designing clothes and then making them. However, she can only sew a few stitches before the machine stops working. I do not know how to sew, so I took the machine to a seamstress thinking I was threading it wrong or that somehow it was my fault that it wasn't working correctly. The seamstress tinkered with it for a bit and then simply said, "Send it back." She could not get the machine to work either. The thread keeps coming out of the needle after a few stitches, and it happens over and over again. Perhaps I have a machine that is defective, but it is not worth it to me to spend the gas money and pay for return shipping only to find out that a new one might have the same problem. At any rate, one gets what one pays for, and this is a cheap machine.
