The background/fabric is black and a little stiffer than ones in other cross-stitch kits I've bought, but I'm enjoying it being black--it makes the cross-stitch seem new and different and the colors pop more. A tip on the directions says to have a white paper or light below the fabric to see the holes better.This was the first cross-stitch kit I've bought where the thread is already organized and even labeled very well.I've finished about one-third of it so far and plan to finish it.
